About the Artist:

Lyle moved to Albuquerque in 1996 from upstate New York where he ran an architectural practice for over 28 years. Mr. Brown received his professional architectural degree from Syracuse University. In 1962, Lyle moved to San Francisco, where he spent a year full time at the San Francisco Art Institute studying oil painting, art history, and figure drawing with teachers such as Elmer Bishoff and Richard Diebenkorn. After a few years living in the Bay Area, Lyle moved back to the East Coast where he taught architectural design at Syracuse University’s School of Architecture for three years as an Associate Professor.

In 2000, Lyle started pastel painting part-time until his retirement in January 2003 as Facility Architect at TVI in Albuquerque. He now devotes full time to developing his artistic sensitivity and skills through his paintings. Lyle has studied pastel painting with Albert Handell, Doug Dawson, Deborah Christensen Secor, Eric Michaels, Leona Turner, and Sue Buck. Through his architectural background and experience in photography, Lyle has always been keenly aware of our visual world and interested in how we react to our spatial relationships. Lyle endeavors to invite the viewer into his paintings through the use of strong colors, light, and composition. He greatly admires the work of the Impressionists.

Lyle feels strongly about the importance of painting in plein-air in order to directly observe and feel the essence of the scene before us; not to imitate or copy, but to be inspired by the place. He feels art is like a journey towards understanding our inner relationship to our environment, while continuously developing a greater intuitive response to the beauty around us. Lyle is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico.
